2 ATMs stolen at Arabian event

SCOTTSDALE - It wasn't just Arabian horses that took off at the 48th annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show this weekend.
Two cash-dispensing automatic teller machines were stolen from the grounds of WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road, between 10 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
The machines were near the vendor tents and were attached to a trailer, which also was taken, police said Monday.
The value of the machines plus the trailer was approximately $20,000, not including the potentially thousands of dollars in cash inside.
"It is unusual. I can't recall it happening in any major event," said Doug Dirren, spokesman for the Scottsdale Police Department. "But then again, portable ATM machines are becoming more and more prevalent at major events, so it shouldn't surprise me."
Janice White, president of the horse show, was not available for comment.
Portable ATMs popped up at other recent happenings in Scottsdale, including the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction and the Phoenix Open.
Although the size of two machines on a trailer would be fairly conspicuous, the flurry of activity that usually accompanies such events could make the removal of two machines appear fairly routine, Dirren said.
